DVW History

Change from Deutscher Geometer Verein (Surveying Association) to Society for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management.

The German Association of Surveying (DVW) was founded in 1871, as a scientific Society at that time named German Surveyor Association. Then, the objective was to promote and elevate surveying in general, particularly by spreading both scientific findings and practical experience. Additionally, todays objectives are the representation, promotion and co-ordination of the objectives and interests of its members in the disciplines of geodesy, geoinformation and land management. Furthermore, it aims to convey specialist developments and practical experience.
Due to all the changes in the past, it is no longer merely the classic surveying which is represented by DVW. It is much more the case that the range of surveying activities has become particularly diverse and complex:

  • navigation
  • land development
  • urban planning
  • national survey
  • engineering surveying
  • cadastral surveying
  • satellite surveying
  • geodata
  • cartography
  • photogrammetry
  • remote sensing
  • hydrography
  • earth science
  • real estate valuation

Consequently, in the year 2000, DVW took this development into account by adding the subtitle Society for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management to its previous name. Now it becomes clear that DVW supports the interests of surveying and related sciences alike.

DVW is a member of the International  Federation of Surveyors (FIG). It comprises 13 registered DVW state associations currently counting approximately 7,300 members.
